On May 4, 2010, the Celebration of the World Press Freedom Day was held at the National Institute of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The official day of the celebration is May 3, but the activity in Cambodia was held on the 4th due to a holiday preceding this date. The celebration was held for the whole day but divided into two main sessions – in the morning with the public and in the afternoon was a workshop among Cambodian journalists on freedom of information and code of ethics for journalism.
In the course of the preparation of the celebration, the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media (CCIM) was planning to hold a conference of Cambodian journalists in the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day to continue the discussion on the code of ethics which it had started during the previous conferences of journalists. However, the Cambodia offices of the United Nation’s Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) and the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) were also planning to hold the celebration of the World Press Freedom Day. After a series of consultation, CCIM agreed with UNOHCHR and UNESCO to jointly hold the celebration in which in the morning the celebration will be opened to the public and in the afternoon CCIM will proceed in conducting workshop with the journalists.
The plan of the CCIM to hold a conference had been discussed in collaboration with Cambodian journalist associations, including the Press Council of Cambodia, and individual journalists.
