But can journalists who accept money ever write a critical article about the person from whom they received the money? According to Pa Nguon Teang, director of the Cambodian Center for Independent Media, the answer is “very simple.”
“If you take money from anyone, you cannot report true things about the issues relating to them,” said Mr. Nguon Teang. “They become the person we call in Khmer, ‘kun’. They are someone who does a good thing for you and later on, you must give them back, whether in money or some other way.”
If the person does not repay the favor, he or she will then do considered a “crocodile,” he said.
“[These journalists] have a relationship with government officials and this is something that might prevent them from reporting the truth that is related with their office,” said Mr. Nguon Teang.
