VOD’s smartphone app has been available for all Android smartphone users since December 2014, and has been downloaded more than 3,000 times. In order to build on the success of the Android app, CCIM is currently working with developers to make an iOS version available by the end of 2015.
Even though developing a mobile app for iOS is a bit complicated and time consuming, CCIM IT Officer Sok Ty said it is important to offer the VOD mobile app in both Android and iOS to allow for more widespread access to VOD programming.
“When we have VOD mobile app available for both Android and iOS, we hope that more people, especially those who are using iPhones or iPads, will download the VOD mobile app, because it is free software that can be easily installed and used,” Ty said.
The app was created as part the “Human Rights Defenders in the Cyber-Age” project, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). CCIM has been working on the app since June 2014 and was able to launch the Android version on Dec. 19, 2014. CCIM Senior Project Manager Hok Narin explained how VOD’s plans for the app evolved throughout the development process.
“In the beginning, we just wanted to create a news reading app, but then we thought that we have many products [radio news, radio programs, online news, photos and videos] and it would be a good idea to include them all in one app and make the app even more useful and fascinating,” Narin said.
To download the VOD smartphone application, visit the Google Play Store and type VOD Hot News in the search bar, then select the VOD app from the results list and click “download and install.” Then, enjoy the convenience of having breaking news alerts and programs sent directly to your mobile phone.
