Press Release
The Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) will celebrate World Radio Day on Feb. 13, focusing on the role radio plays in empowering Cambodians — and especially women — through access to information.
To celebrate World Radio Day this Thursday, Feb. 13, CCIM and Voice of Democracy (VoD) will:
- Broadcast a special show from 2-3 p.m. on Sarika FM 106.5. The show will include the history of World Radio Day and interviews with government and civil society leaders. Listeners will be invited to call in to the show and share their ideas on the role of radio in Cambodia.
- Air short “street interviews” from early morning until late night, some conducted by CCIM-trained citizen journalists interviewing people in their community. As way to celebrate the gender focus of this year’s World Radio Day, women will be the primary interview subjects, giving a voice to women in Cambodia.
- Produce a special feature focusing on radio in Cambodia and its role as a provider of information to the public.
Despite the country’s rapidly developing information and communications technology sector, radio still plays a key role in Cambodia. It is one of the most popular mediums for transmitting information, with more than 50 percent of the population listening to radio on a weekly basis.[1] The influence of radio listenership is considerable, as witnessed in the government’s attempt to restrict access to radio programming in the lead-up to the 2013 national elections[2].
Through its production house VoD, CCIM is making great strides in its efforts to use radio to fulfil its vision of “Everybody well informed, everybody empowered.” Radio broadcasts have proven a particularly effective tool in the fight for women’s empowerment, with VoD producing programming aimed at equipping Cambodian women with the knowledge they need to make change.
CCIM promotes ethical principles and action supporting gender equality through its media programmes and its field projects as well as within the organization itself. CCIM and VoD are very proud to employ five female radio hosts who are passionate about empowering and equipping Cambodian women to make a difference through the power of information.
