Debate to assess impact of ASEAN integration on Cambodian labour

Press Release

As the 2015 ASEAN economic integration approaches, concerns over labour movement continue to grow among the citizens of its members, and especially Cambodia, which remains one of the region’s least-developed members, struggling to compete on the regional stage. In addition, the free-flow of labour promised by integration will present unique challenges for the Cambodian government. At the same time, the differences in skill and wage levels among member states suggest that there are potential benefits to be reaped from the removal of restrictions on movement.

With the goal of stimulating discussion on the challenges and opportunities that ASEAN integration will present for Cambodia’s labour rights movements, the Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) in partnership with Asia Calling of Indonesia will host a regional forum debate on “Labour Rights and Preparation of 2015 ASEAN Community” on March 28, 2014, in Phnom Penh. The debate will feature local and international experts on labour and ASEAN integration and will include discussion and idea sharing from local university students as well as representatives from political parties and NGOs. See the event agenda attached for more details.

When: 8:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 28, 2014
Where: Imperial Garden Villa & Hotel, Phnom Penh
