On November 27th, the Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) will organise a half-day conference in Phnom Penh to issue recommendations to the NEC and release the findings of two investigative reports.
The conference will start at 8:30 AM at the Imperial Garden Hotel (see attached program). A panel composed of.H.E. Mao Monyvann, CNRP’s Lawmaker, Mr.Lay Tep ,Election Project assistant of NICFEC and Mr.Sin Tethseyha, COMFREL’s observer officer, will discuss the outcomes of the July 28th National Elections Assembly.
“CCIM welcomes the recent agreement between the Cambodian People Party (CPP) and the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) to reform the electoral system. We encourage them and the NEC to take all irregularities into account in order to make sure that the reform responding to the basic need of the people. A true electoral system reform must happen and these findings may be a useful contribution to it. Moreover, CCIM calls for more transparency in sharing the information about the elections to enable journalists to report properly”, said Pa Ngoun Teang, executive director of CCIM.
This conference is the first one CCIM organises after the elections. It will present first-hand accounts of events that occurred on Election Day and after. The investigative reports and the recommendations are aimed to improve the Cambodian electoral process towards free and fair elections. The recommendations that will be issued have been formulated by Cambodian citizens who participated to two community forums organized by CCIM between August and October. The two investigative reports were conducted by reporters from the Voice of Democracy radio after Election Day.
This type of conference is the second one organized as part of a project entitled “Promoting investigative and independent report to improve electoral process in Cambodia”. Throughout this project, CCIM is conducting a series of 6 investigative reports and 6 community forums from April to February 2014 as well as three conferences to present the findings and recommendations. The two reports will be broadcast on SarikaFM on December 2nd and December 3rd in Phnom Penh (106.5Fm) from 7 to 8 AM and in Siem Reap (95.5Fm) from 8 to 9 AM. They will then also be available as podcasts on www.vodhotnews.com.
The previous conference was organised in Phnom Penh on June 24th. More than 100 people attended it, representing civil society organisations and local authorities.
